Prayer for protection

Wanting the people you love to be safe is one of the most natural things to pray about. Maybe your daughter just got her license, your husband flies out Monday, or you lie awake running through everyone under your roof. These prayers, drawn from Psalm 91 and the prayers of Jesus, help you place your family in God’s care, calmly and honestly. Pray them word for word, or stop at any line and keep going with your own family’s names.

A short prayer for protection

Father, you are our refuge. Please watch over the people I love today, at home and at school, at work and on the road. Cover us with your care, keep us from harm and from evil, and help us rest in your faithfulness. I place each one of them in your hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A prayer for protection

Father in heaven, you know every person under my roof and every person I carry in my heart. You know where each of them is right now, and you see what I cannot see.

Jesus, on the night before the cross, you prayed for your disciples and asked the Father to keep them. I bring you the people I love in the same way. Keep them close to you, wherever today takes them.

Watch over our home and over our comings and goings: the drive to work, the flight, the long shift, the walk home. Be with our children at school and our parents far away. Where there is danger we cannot see, turn it aside.

Jesus taught us to ask you to “deliver us from the evil one” (Matthew 6:13), and I ask it now for all of us. Guard our minds from fear, and let us trust you more than our worries.

I can’t be with each of them every minute, but you are. You are our refuge. Whatever this day brings, cover us with your faithfulness and hold us in your peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

From Scripture

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.””

Psalm 91:1–2

“He will cover you with his feathers. Under his wings you will take refuge. His faithfulness is your shield and rampart.”

Psalm 91:4

Prayer for family protection

Your spouse leaves before dawn for the job site, your dad is driving three hours to see his sister, and the house fills up again only at dinner. You can’t go everywhere with them, but you can pray for each of them by name. Psalm 121, a song for pilgrims on the road to Jerusalem, ends with this: “The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.” (Psalm 121:8)

A prayer for protection over your family

Lord, thank you for my family and for this home. Watch over (name) as they head to work today, and over everyone who is traveling, on the highway or in the air. Be near my parents and give them strength. Guard our home and the way we speak to one another. Keep us from harm, and if hard things come, hold us together and close to you. At the end of the day, bring us back to each other. Amen.

Prayer for protection for children

You watch the school bus pull away, or your teenager’s taillights turn the corner, or you hang up with a grown son two time zones away. Loving children means letting them go a little further every year. When the disciples tried to turn children away, Jesus said: “Allow the little children to come to me!” (Mark 10:14) Praying for your kids is one way of bringing them to him.

A prayer for your children’s protection

Jesus, I bring my children to you: (name), and each one you have given me. Watch over them at school, on the bus and behind the wheel. Give them good friends and the courage to walk away from the wrong ones. Guard what they see and hear online, and help them come to us when something feels wrong. For the ones who are grown and far from home, be near where I can’t be. Keep them close to you all their lives. Amen.

Night prayer for protection

You check the back door, switch off the porch light and look in on the kids one last time. The house goes quiet, and for a moment every worry about the people you love feels louder. David ended one psalm with “In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep” (Psalm 4:8), because he trusted God, not his own watchfulness, to keep him safe. Locking the door is wise; the rest you can hand to God.

A night prayer for your home and family

Father, the doors are locked and the lights are off, and I give this house back to you. Watch over everyone sleeping under this roof tonight, and everyone we love who is sleeping somewhere else. Protect us from danger and harm. Give the children peaceful sleep. Whatever I have worried about today, I leave with you now. I have done what I can to keep this home safe; the rest is yours. Let the last thought in this house tonight be of you. Amen.

Questions,
answered.

Does Psalm 91 promise that nothing bad will happen?

Psalm 91 is a song of trust, not a guarantee against every hardship. It uses the bold language of poetry to describe God’s care for those who make him their refuge. When the devil quoted this psalm to Jesus and urged him to jump from the temple, Jesus refused to put God to the test (Matthew 4:5–7). Faithful people still face accidents and loss, and it does not mean they trusted too little. The psalm itself says: “I will be with him in trouble.” (Psalm 91:15)

How do I pray for family protection?

Keep it simple and specific. Name each person, think about where they will be today, and ask God to watch over them there: the commute, the flight, the hospital shift, the first day at a new school. Thank him for them, too. Many families pray together at breakfast or before bed, and even one sentence whispered at the front door counts.

Can I pray for protection over my children every day?

Yes, and many parents do. Jesus told his disciples a parable about praying and not giving up (Luke 18:1). Praying daily for your kids is not a sign that you trust God less. It is a way of handing them back to him each morning. You can pray over them while they sleep, bless them at the door, or pray with them before school.

Is it okay to ask God for protection?

Yes. On the night before he died, Jesus prayed for his disciples: “I pray not that you would take them from the world, but that you would keep them from the evil one.” (John 17:15) Asking for protection is not a lack of courage or faith. It is what children do when they trust their Father, and it goes hand in hand with wise care like seat belts, locked doors and honest conversations.
