Prayer for guidance

Maybe a decision is waiting on you: a job offer, a move, a relationship. Or maybe you simply don’t know what comes next. These prayers can help you bring it to God honestly and ask for his wisdom. You don’t need perfect words. Begin here.

A short prayer for guidance

Lord, I don’t know which way to go, and I need your wisdom. Show me your way, and give me a willing heart to follow it. Quiet the noise in my head and help me trust you with what I can’t see yet. Amen.

A prayer for guidance

Father, I come to you with a question I can’t answer on my own. You know the choice in front of me, and you know my heart better than I do.

Jesus, you often slipped away to quiet places to pray. Teach me to slow down and bring this to you first, not last.

Please give me wisdom. Open my eyes when I read your word. Put the right people in my path, and help me listen when they say what I don’t want to hear. If I’m heading the wrong way, turn me around.

I don’t need to see the whole road. Give me enough light for the next step, and the faith to take it. If I choose poorly, remind me that I am still yours, and that you are not finished with me.

I place my plans and this decision in your hands. Let your will matter more to me than my own. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

From Scripture

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Proverbs 3:5–6

“Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.”

Psalm 119:105

Bible verses about guidance

Prayer for wisdom and guidance

The job offer is sitting in your inbox, the lease is almost up, or someone you love is asking where this relationship is going. Before Jesus chose his twelve apostles, “he went out to the mountain to pray, and he continued all night in prayer to God.” (Luke 6:12) You can bring your decision to the Father first too.

A prayer for wisdom before a big decision

Father, I have a decision to make, and I don’t want to make it alone. You see where each road leads and who it will affect. Give me wisdom. Help me weigh it honestly, not by fear or by what will impress people. Bring wise counsel into my life, and give me ears to hear it. When it’s time to decide, give me the courage to choose and the peace to leave the outcome with you. Amen.

Prayer for guidance and direction

Sometimes there’s no single decision, just fog, and you lie awake wondering what your life is for. Jesus pictured life with him as a branch staying close to the vine: “Remain in me, and I in you.” (John 15:4) Purpose usually grows out of that closeness, one faithful day at a time.

A prayer for direction and purpose

Lord Jesus, I don’t know what’s next, and some days I wonder what I’m here for. Keep me close to you, like a branch to the vine. Show me the next faithful step, even if it looks small: the work in front of me, the people near me, the gifts you’ve given me. Take away the fear of wasting my life, and let my days bear fruit for your glory and the good of others. Amen.

Prayer for strength and guidance

Maybe you already know the honest conversation you need to have, or the job you need to walk away from, and doing it is the hard part. In Gethsemane, the night before the cross, Jesus prayed: “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” (Luke 22:42) He told his Father what he wanted, and then he surrendered.

A prayer for strength to follow God’s way

Father, I think I know what you’re asking of me, and part of me doesn’t want to do it. I’m afraid of what it will cost. I’m not asking to feel sure, only for enough courage to begin, and to keep going. Jesus, you chose your Father’s way even when it led to the cross, so you understand. Stay with me in the hard part, and help me want your will above mine. Amen.

Prayer for guidance and protection

Maybe you’re packing the car for a long drive, or watching your son or daughter leave for college. Psalm 121, one of the pilgrim songs, ends with this: “The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.” (Psalm 121:8) It isn’t a promise that nothing hard will happen, but a reminder that you never travel outside God’s care. If you’re praying for someone you love, say their name wherever the prayer says “me”.

A prayer for guidance and protection on the road ahead

Lord, a new road is opening in front of me, and I place it in your hands before the first step. Go ahead of me. Guide my choices along the way, big and small. Watch over me while I travel and while I settle into a new place. Give me a clear head, good people around me and a heart that keeps turning back to you. Whatever I meet on this road, let me meet it with you. Amen.

If a decision feels too heavy to carry alone, talk it through with a pastor or a trusted friend as you pray.

Questions,
answered.

How do I know God’s will for my life?

Rarely through a formula. Most often God guides through several things together: Scripture, honest prayer, the counsel of wise believers (Proverbs 15:22), a settled peace and your circumstances. You don’t need to wait for a dramatic sign. In many choices more than one option can honor God, and he goes with you whichever you choose.

What if I make the wrong choice?

It does not mean you missed God for good or ruined his plans. “A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9) He can lead you on from where you are. If the choice involved sin, confess it and receive his forgiveness (1 John 1:9), then keep walking with him.

How do I pray about a big decision?

Tell God the options plainly, including what you hope for and what scares you. Ask for wisdom, then give it time: read Scripture, talk it over with people who know you well, and notice what keeps coming back as you pray. When the time comes, decide, and trust him with the outcome.

What does the Bible say about asking God for wisdom?

It invites you to ask, and God won’t scold you for needing to: “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5) When young King Solomon could have asked for anything, he asked for “an understanding heart” (1 Kings 3:9), and the request pleased God (1 Kings 3:10).
