Prayer for healing

When someone you love is sick, or your own body is struggling, the right words can be hard to find. These prayers are here to help you bring what you’re facing to God honestly, alongside the care of doctors and nurses, not instead of it. Pray them as they are, or let them lead you into your own words.

A short prayer for healing

Lord Jesus, you see this sickness and everything it is doing to us. Please bring your healing. Give wisdom to the doctors and nurses and everyone caring for us, ease the pain, and hold us in your peace while we wait. I trust you with what I cannot control. Amen.

A prayer for healing

Father in heaven, I come to you because I don’t know where else to take this. You made our bodies, and nothing about this sickness is hidden from you.

Jesus, when you walked the roads of Galilee, people brought the sick to you, and you did not send them away. You touched people others kept at a distance, and you stopped for the ones who called out to you. So I bring this to you now, just as it is.

Please bring your healing. Where medicine can help, guide the minds and hands of the doctors and nurses. Where strength is worn thin, renew it. Where there is pain, bring relief and rest. Where fear has crept in, speak your peace.

I don’t know how this will unfold, and I won’t pretend I’m not afraid. But I know you are good, and you are close to the brokenhearted. Help me trust you in the waiting, one day at a time.

Whatever tomorrow holds, keep us close to you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

From Scripture

“Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed. Save me, and I will be saved; for you are my praise.”

Jeremiah 17:14

“He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.”

Psalm 147:3

Healing prayer for a friend or family member

Maybe it’s your mom in the hospital, a friend waiting on test results, or a spouse home after a stroke. When Lazarus was ill, his sisters sent Jesus a simple message: “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.” (John 11:3) They didn’t tell him what to do. They told him who was sick, and how loved he was. You can pray the same way: say their name, and trust Jesus with the rest.

A prayer for someone you love who is sick

Lord Jesus, (name) is sick, and I love them so much. You love them even more. Be with them right now, in the hospital or at home, in the tests, the waiting and the long nights. Give their doctors and nurses wisdom and gentle hands. Ease their pain, quiet their fears, and let them feel you near, even when no one else is in the room. Give everyone caring for them strength, and give us patience with each other. We ask you for healing, and we place (name) in your hands. Amen.

Prayer for a sick child

Few things feel as helpless as sitting beside a sick child: the fever that won’t come down, the ER waiting room at midnight, the hospital bracelet on a small wrist. When Jairus’s daughter was dying, he fell at Jesus’ feet and begged him, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Please come and lay your hands on her, that she may be made healthy, and live.” (Mark 5:23) Jesus stopped and went with him. Not every story ends the way Jairus’s did, and that is never because a parent didn’t beg hard enough. But Jesus goes with you too, and you can bring your child to him with the same desperate honesty.

A prayer for my sick child

Jesus, you welcomed children and blessed them. Please be with (name) right now. Soothe their body, comfort them when it hurts, and let them sleep. Give the doctors and nurses skill, and patience with a frightened little one. Calm (name)’s fears, and help me stay calm for them. When I am exhausted and scared, hold me up. This child was yours before they were ever mine, and I trust them to you tonight. Please heal them, and stay with us through every hour of this. Amen.

Prayer for healing from cancer

One appointment, one word, and everything changes. Then come the scans, the treatment plan, the side effects and the long wait for results. You don’t have to be brave in front of God. In a psalm written from deep trouble, David put his whole future into one line: “My times are in your hand.” (Psalm 31:15) Pray for healing, and pray for everyone on the care team. Prayer goes alongside treatment, not in place of it. If you are the one facing cancer, pray it for yourself and put “me” in place of (name).

A prayer for someone with cancer

Lord Jesus, cancer has come into (name)’s life, and we are afraid. You know their body better than any scan, and you know every result we are waiting for. Please heal them. Guide their doctors and nurses, bless the treatment, and ease the nausea, the pain and the exhaustion. On the days they feel weak, carry them. On the days we wait for news, keep our hearts steady. Whatever the next scan says, hold (name) close and don’t let them feel alone. Amen.

Prayer for strength and healing for yourself

When you are the one who is sick, praying can feel harder, not easier. You may be tired, in pain, or frustrated with a body that won’t cooperate. The apostle Paul asked God three times to take away his own affliction, and heard this answer: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9) You don’t have to be strong to pray. You only have to be honest.

A prayer for your own healing

God, I’m tired of being sick, and some days I’m scared. You know what my body is going through, and you know my heart. Please heal me. Give me strength for today, for the appointments, the treatments and the long hours. When I can’t find the words, let your Spirit carry my prayers to you. Help me rest, accept help from others, and hold on to hope. Be my strength when mine runs out. Amen.

Prayer before surgery

The night before an operation can feel long. The forms are signed and the instructions followed, and now there is nothing left to do but wait. David wrote Psalm 56 when the Philistines had seized him in Gath, and he decided where his fear would go: “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.” (Psalm 56:3) You can pray this tonight or in the morning before you go in. If the surgery is for someone you love, pray it for them and put their name in place of “me”.

A prayer before surgery tomorrow

Lord, the surgery is tomorrow, and I’m placing it in your hands. Give the surgeon a steady hand and a clear mind, and bless everyone in the operating room. Watch over me while I’m under anesthesia and can’t pray for myself. Guide my recovery, ease the pain afterward, and help my body heal well. Give my family peace while they wait for news. Right now, let me rest in your care. Amen.

Questions,
answered.

Is it okay to pray for healing?

Yes. In the Gospels, people brought the sick to Jesus again and again, and he laid his hands on them (Luke 4:40). The letter of James tells anyone who is sick to call the elders of the church to pray over them (James 5:14). Asking God for healing is an act of trust, not a lack of it.

Should I stop medical treatment if I am praying for healing?

No. Prayer and medical care belong together. Many Christians see doctors, nurses and medicine as one of the ways God cares for us. Keep following the advice of your medical team, and pray for the people treating you.

What if I pray and the person does not get better?

Many faithful people have prayed for healing that did not come the way they hoped. Paul left his friend Trophimus sick in Miletus (2 Timothy 4:20). It does not mean you did not pray enough or believe enough, and it does not mean God has stopped caring. At the tomb of his friend Lazarus, Jesus wept with the people who loved him (John 11:35). God stays close in grief too. Keep bringing him your questions, and let the people around you help carry the weight.

How do I pray for someone who is sick?

Keep it simple: say their name, tell God what you are worried about, and ask for healing, for their doctors and for peace. If they are comfortable with it, pray with them, even for a minute at the bedside or on the phone. And let them know you are praying. That alone can carry someone through a hard day.

Where can I ask others to pray for healing?

Start with your church, your small group or a friend you trust. In the Talk to Jesus app you can also share a request on the Prayer Wall, with your name or as “Someone”. Every request is read by a person before it appears, and others can pray for you.

Bring it to God out loud.

Talk to Jesus is a prayer app, free to download. Say what you are carrying, out loud, and hear a calm voice shaped by the Gospels. Or share a request on the Prayer Wall so others can pray with you.

Free on iPhone and Android. The voice is AI, not Jesus, and it never replaces prayer, Scripture or your church.
